A Family Safari for Ten: Malaria-Free, Big Five and Less Than Half the Price

Grandparents, parents and little ones on one African safari. Four nights in Cape Town, four nights at a private game reserve, and what it really costs in July 2027 with flights from Canada and the US.

The Gatherwell Journal

Ten of you. One safari. And it costs less than half of what the famous lodges charge.

I love planning luxury travel. But I always say, I just want people to travel together, no matter what the budget. An African safari is one of those trips people put on the someday list and leave there. It feels too far, too expensive, and too complicated with kids and grandparents in tow.

So I set out to find a safari a family of ten could actually do, from the first flight to the last game drive. I compared lodges in Greater Kruger and the Eastern Cape, read the rate sheets and the specials pages, and priced the whole trip from four Canadian cities and four US cities. This is what I found.

Can a family of ten really afford an African safari?

Yes, if you choose the reserve, the rooms and the season carefully. A week and a bit in South Africa for a family of ten, with four nights in Cape Town, four nights on safari and flights from Edmonton, comes to about C$6,100 per adult in July 2027. From New York it is about US$4,300 per adult. Children come in lower.

That is still a big trip. But it is a long way from the US$1,700 to US$4,000 per person, per night that the flagship lodges in Sabi Sand and Greater Kruger publish. The difference comes from three decisions: going somewhere malaria-free, booking rooms built for families, and travelling in the reserve's low season.

Where can you go on safari in South Africa without malaria tablets?

The private game reserves of the Eastern Cape are malaria-free. Most of the best-known safari lodges sit in and around Greater Kruger, which is a malaria-risk area. South Africa's health authorities advise visitors there to speak with a doctor about preventive medication.

For a couple, that is a prescription and a few tablets. For a family bringing a four-year-old and a grandparent who is already on other medications, it is a real consideration. The Eastern Cape takes that conversation off the table, and it is a short flight from Cape Town, so it fits neatly into one trip.

As always, talk to your own doctor or a travel clinic about your family's health before any international trip.

What is Kariega Game Reserve like for families?

It is one of the most family-friendly reserves I found. Kariega is a private reserve of 10,000 hectares between the Kariega and Bushmans rivers, about an hour and a half by road from the airport in Gqeberha. It has been family owned since 1989, and lions, elephants, rhino, buffalo and leopard all live there.

Kariega has five lodges, and the Main Lodge is the one built for families. It welcomes children of all ages, and its log chalets come with one, two, three or four bedrooms. Every bedroom has its own bathroom, and each chalet has a shared lounge and a big private deck looking over the valley. Some have their own plunge pools.

Two game drives a day are included, along with all meals, river cruises and guided bush walks. There is a children's program every day from about 11 in the morning to 2 in the afternoon, so the kids are busy and the adults get a nap. Main Lodge is rated 4.8 on Tripadvisor across more than 3,000 reviews, and the beach town of Kenton-on-Sea is about 14 kilometres away.

Anyone can sell you a safari. What I plan is the time together.

How much does a family safari for ten cost with flights?

About C$6,100 per adult from Edmonton, Calgary or Vancouver, C$5,800 from Toronto, and US$4,300 to US$4,500 from New York, Houston, Los Angeles and Phoenix. That covers eight nights in South Africa and return flights. Children 12 and under come in about C$1,100 or US$800 less.

Here is how I put it together, for six adults and four children aged 4 to 12:

Cape Town, four nights. A five-bedroom family villa with a pool in Constantia, the wine valley on the city's southern side, shared by all ten of you. One day exploring the Cape Peninsula with a private guide.

A short flight east. Cape Town to Gqeberha, then a private transfer into the reserve.

Kariega, four nights. Two three-bedroom chalets side by side at Main Lodge, with every game drive, cruise, walk and meal included.

From Canada, in CAD, 8 nights, flights included, July 2027
Edmonton C$6,100 adult · C$5,000 child
Calgary C$6,100 adult · C$5,000 child
Vancouver C$6,100 adult · C$5,000 child
Toronto C$5,800 adult · C$4,700 child
For all ten, about C$56,500 from Edmonton. Estimates, based on six adults and four children aged 4 to 12.
From the US, in USD, 8 nights, flights included, July 2027
New York US$4,300 adult · US$3,500 child
Houston US$4,400 adult · US$3,600 child
Los Angeles US$4,500 adult · US$3,700 child
Phoenix US$4,500 adult · US$3,700 child
For all ten, about US$40,000 from New York or US$42,000 from Phoenix. Estimates. Ask me for a live quote on your dates.

Drinks are not included at Main Lodge, so set aside something for those, along with tips, travel insurance and any spa time.

Why do safari lodges with the same rating cost so differently?

Mostly the name and the location, not the animals. Four nights for one adult at one of the best-known family lodges in Greater Kruger costs R64,000 in the first half of 2027, about US$3,850 or C$5,400. Four nights at Kariega Main Lodge in July, with the conservation levy, comes to R29,168, about US$1,750 or C$2,450. Both lodges are rated 4.8 on Tripadvisor.

Part of the gap is fine print. Kariega offers a group rate when four or more guests paying adult rates share a Main Lodge chalet. A family of ten fills two chalets and qualifies without trying. You would only know that if you read the specials page and asked. In fairness, the Kruger lodge includes selected drinks and Kariega does not, but that doesn't come close to closing the gap.

When is the cheapest time to go on safari at Kariega?

May to August is Kariega's low season, and it lines up with summer holidays in Canada and the US. The standard Main Lodge rate drops from R8,900 to R7,600 per person per night, and the group rate takes it lower again. Children 12 and under pay half, and children 3 and under stay free.

The trade-off is the weather. July is winter in South Africa. Game drives start early, and the mornings are crisp, so everyone needs a warm jacket and layers. Cape Town can be rainy in winter, so I keep one day there flexible. The upside, as Kariega puts it, is starry winter nights around the fire.

What should you know before booking a family safari?

That the lodge is a choice, not a default. Main Lodge is a friendly, sociable lodge with other families around you, not a private house. If you would rather have a place of your own, Kariega also has an exclusive-use homestead with five bedrooms that sleeps ten. It costs considerably more, but I am happy to price it.

A few other things I tell families. Some chalets are a short walk from the main lodge, so I ask for ones close in when there are grandparents or little ones. And Kariega is a member of Pack for a Purpose, so if your family has a few kilos to spare in a suitcase, you can bring school, clothing or first aid supplies for the reserve's community projects. It is a lovely way to involve the kids.

What does a travel advisor add to a family safari?

The time together. Anyone can sell you a safari. When I plan a trip for a family or a group, the lodge is the easy part. What matters is what happens between the game drives.

Everyone finds their own itinerary waiting in their room. One meal a day is together, and the rest is optional, so nobody gets dragged along and nobody feels left out. There is a guide of conversation prompts and games for the table, because three generations don't always know where to start. On our own family trip for 29, the moments we still talk about were the after-dinner family times.

Then there is the homework: the rate comparisons, the specials page, the season, the trade-offs, and one person to call when something changes. The more research I do, the more I see the opportunities to go on an African safari, from budget to ultra-lux. I plan group travel, family travel and meaningful couples experiences, and I'd love to tailor-make your family's next adventure with thoughtfulness, impeccable planning and the special details that make a journey unforgettable.

So dream with me

Who would you bring? Tell me three things: where you'd go, who's coming, and your budget per person. It doesn't have to be Africa. I'll price it from your city.

Prices are estimates per person for July 2027, researched October 2026, based on six adults and four children aged 4 to 12 travelling together. They include four nights at Kariega Main Lodge at its published 2027 group rate (all meals and game activities, drinks extra) with the 2027 conservation and community levy; four nights in a five-bedroom Cape Town villa at a published starting rate shared by ten; an allowance for the Cape Town to Gqeberha flight, transfers and a guided day; and a typical round-trip economy fare from each city. Converted at US$1 = R16.64 and US$1 = C$1.40. The Greater Kruger comparison uses Kapama River Lodge's published January to June 2027 rate, which includes selected drinks.
